Compatibility

What type of web browser do I need?


TDLC requires a supported browser such as Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.x or Netscape Navigator 4.x. Netscape Navigator 6 is not officially supported.

How do I enable JavaScript?


If JavaScript is disabled, you will be unable to use this system. To enable JavaScript, make the following change to your browser preferences:

Netscape 4.x Macintosh and PC:

  • Select Preferences from the Edit menu.
  • Select Advanced from the Category list.
  • Check the Enable JavaScript checkbox.
  • Click OK to close the Preferences window.

Netscape 3.x Macintosh and PC:

  • Select Network Preferences from the Options menu.
  • Click the Languages tab.
  • Check the Enable JavaScript checkbox in the JavaScript pane.
  • Click OK to close the Preferences window.

Internet Explorer 5.x - 4.x PC:

Internet Explorer 5.x - 4.x Macintosh:

  • Select Preferences from the Edit menu.
  • Select Web Content from the Category list.
  • Check the Enable Scripting checkbox in the Active Content pane.
  • Click OK to close the Preferences window.

How do I enable Cookies?


If Cookies are disabled or rejected, you will be unable to use this system. To enable Cookies, make the following change to your browser preferences:

Netscape 4.x Macintosh and PC:

  • Select Preferences from the Edit menu.
  • Select Advanced from the Category list.
  • Set the Cookies radio button to Accept all cookies.
  • Click OK to close the Preferences window.

Netscape 3.x Macintosh and PC:

  • Select Network Preferences from the Options menu.
  • Click the Protocols tab.
  • Uncheck the Show an Alert Before Accepting a Cookie checkbox.
  • Click OK to close the Preferences window.

Internet Explorer 4.x PC:

  • Select Internet Options from the View menu.
  • Click the Advanced tab.
  • Select the Security category from the Advanced category.
  • Select the Cookies category from the Security category.
  • Set the Cookies radio button to Always accept cookies.
  • Click OK to close the Internet Options window.

Internet Explorer 5.x - 4.x Macintosh:

  • Select Preferences from the Edit menu.
  • Select Receiving Files from the Category list.
  • Select Cookies from the Web Browser category.
  • Set the When receiving cookies popup menu in the Cookie Settings pane to Never Ask.
  • Click OK to close the Preferences window.

What if I am using a personal firewall?


Some personal firewalls, including ad-blocking and script-blocking software, are incompatible with the TDLC subscription system.

If you cannot access our site unless you turn off your personal firewall, the problem is the settings of your software. Please refer to the documentation that came with your software, paying close attention to the following subjects: Cookies, JavaScript, and Pop-up Windows.

What if I am using America Online?


America Online's built-in web browser is incompatible with the TDLC subscription system.

AOL Version 3.0 and above lets you run third-party Internet applications over your AOL Internet connection. Download, install, and use a current version of either Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator to access this site.

You can use Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator by simply connecting to America Online the way you normally do, and then starting the other application.

How do I add TDLC as a trusted site to Internet Explorer?


Some administrators have instructed their users to turn off Active Scripting in Internet Explorer for security reasons. However, TDLC requires Active Scripting to ensure its own security. You can comply with both needs in Internet Explorer by adding TDLC as a trusted site. Active Scripting will remain disabled for any non-trusted sites.

Internet Explorer 6.x - 5.x PC:

  • From the Tools menu, choose Internet Options....
  • From the Internet Options dialog, choose the Security tab.
  • In the selection box labeled Select a Web content zone to specify its security settings choose the icon labeled Trusted sites.
  • Choose the Sites... button. You should now see the Trusted Sites dialog.
  • Make sure the Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone check box is clear.
  • In the Add this Web site to the zone text box, type *.tdlc.com and choose the Add button. You should now see the text *.tdlc.com in the Web Sites list box. Choose the OK button to save the new setting.
  • You should be back to the Security tab on the Internet Options dialog. Choose the Custom Level... button. You should now see the Security Settings dialog.
  • In the Settings list box, under the heading Active Scripting, choose the Enable radio button. Choose the OK button to save the new setting.
  • You should be back to the Security tab on the Internet Options dialog. Choose the OK button to save your new settings.

How do I disable caching?


Some proxy servers, including America Online's proxy servers, often incorrectly cache web pages. To prevent this, make the following change to your browser preferences:

Netscape 4.x Macintosh and PC:

  • Select Preferences from the Edit menu.
  • Select Advanced from the Category list.
  • Select Cache from the Advanced category.
  • Set the Document in cache is compared: radio button to Every time.
  • Click OK to close the Preferences window.

Netscape 3.x Macintosh and PC:

  • Select Network Preferences from the Options menu.
  • Click the Cache tab.
  • Set the Verify documents radio button to Every time.
  • Click OK to close the Preferences window.

Internet Explorer 6.x - 5.x PC:

  • Select Internet Options from the Tools menu.
  • Click the Settings button in the Temporary Internet Files pane.
  • Set the Check for newer version of stored pages radio button to Every visit to the page.
  • Click OK to close the Temporary Internet Files window.
  • Click OK again to close the Internet Options window.

Internet Explorer 4.x PC:

  • Select Internet Options from the View menu.
  • Click the Settings button in the Temporary Internet Files pane.
  • Set the Check for newer version of stored pages radio button to Every visit to the page.
  • Click OK to close the Temporary Internet Files window.
  • Click OK again to close the Internet Options window.

Internet Explorer 5.x - 4.x Macintosh:

  • Select Preferences from the Edit menu.
  • Select Web Browser from the Category list.

Why is Netscape Navigator 6.x not officially supported?


Netscape Navigator 6.x attempts to comply with current web browser standards, and be backward-compatible with previous browsers.

It fails at both.

How do I disable Netscape SmartDownload?


SmartDownload is a feature from Netscape designed to assist you with downloading files from the Internet.

It is not that smart.

If SmartDownload starts when you download a file, and you have problems downloading, click the Advanced button in the SmartDownload dialog box and disable SmartDownload, then try downloading the file again.

Or, click the Windows Start Menu, select Programs, Netscape SmartDownload, and Disable SmartDownload.

Accounts and Subscriptions

What is an account?


An account is created the first time you subscribe to a publication. An account is basically a method of gaining access to your subscriptions. Each user should have only one account, but each account may have many subscriptions.

After your account has been created, you will receive a username and password which will give you the ability to logon to TDLC.

What is a subscription?


A subscription is basically a method of gaining access to a specific publication for a specified period of time.

Do I have to create a new account each time I want to subscribe or renew a subscription to a publication?


No.

Each user should have only one account, but each account may have many subscriptions. After your account has been created, it can be used to subscribe to any number of publications.

To subscribe to a new publication, logon to TDLC with your username and password, click on Products or Subscribe, then click on the Subscribe link below the publication.

To renew a subscription, logon to TDLC with your username and password, then click on the Renew link below the subscription in your Subscription List.

If I have multiple accounts, can I combine their subscriptions into a single account?


Maybe.

What happens to my progress when my free-trial-period expires?


Work that is completed during a free-trial-period is kept after the free-trial-period expires. After your trial period has expired, you may renew your subscription to that publication, enabling you to pick up where you left off.

Note that you may not subscribe to more than one free-trial-period per publication.

What is the price of each subscription?


To find the subscription prices of each publication, click the Products or Subscribe link, click on the Subscribe link below the publication, then click on the Purchase Online link.

What does a username look like?


A username consists of three letters, followed by three numbers. The three letters include your initials.

Example for John Doe: jxd111

What does a password look like?


A password initially consists of a combination of seven random (non-deterministic) letters and numbers.

How can I change my account information?


To change your account information, logon to TDLC with your username and password, and then click on Change Password or Modify Account.

Why logoff?


Logging off is important to the security of your account and subscriptions for the following reasons:

  • It guarantees that our systems will properly save your progress.
  • It prevents anyone else from accessing your account information (including your password) from your workstation.

Users are automatically logged off after a six-hour period. At that time, our systems will attempt to save your progress without your assistance

Note that this does not mean your account information or progress was protected while you were away.

Therefore, it is always best to make a habit of logging off before leaving your workstation.

Errors

Are your servers working?


You can check the status of our servers using our System Status page.

What is TDLC Error 101?


You are not logged on. This error may have been caused by the following:

  • You have tried to access your subscription without logging on.

    Solution: logon. Go to http://www.tdlc.com/ and logon. After you have logged on, use your Subscription List to access your subscription.

  • Cookies have been disabled. We use cookies to remember your logon.

    Solution: enable cookies. Click here for instructions on enabling cookies. Then go to http://www.tdlc.com/ and logon. After you have logged on, use your Subscription List to access your subscription.

  • Your web browser has incorrectly cached a page.

    Solution: disable caching. Click here for instructions on disable caching. Then restart your computer. Go to http://www.tdlc.com/ and logon. After you have logged on, use your Subscription List to access your subscription.

What is TDLC Error 102?


This error occurs when you continue to attempt to access a subscription after receiving a TDLC Error 101.

Solution: resolve TDLC Error 101 first. Click here for instructions.

What is TDLC Error 103?


You logon cookie is invalid. This error may have been caused by the following:

  • Your cookie has been damaged.
  • Your cookie has been modified.

Solution: logon again. Go to http://www.tdlc.com/ and logon. After you have logged on, use your Subscription List to access your subscription. If the error continues, contact your network administrator.

Why did my credit card transaction fail?


This error may have been caused by the following:

  • Your bank declined the credit card transaction.

    Solution: since we do not have access to your bank account information, contact your bank for details. Then logon and subscribe again.

  • Our bank declined the credit card transaction.

    Solution: verify your credit card number, expiration date, cardholder name and address. Then logon and subscribe again.

  • Our bank was unable to be contact your bank in order to process a transaction. If our bank cannot contact your bank, we cannot execute a transaction.

    Solution: wait three hours. Then logon and subscribe again.

If any case, do not try to subscribe more than three times per twenty-four-hour period. Too many unsuccessful transactions may lead your bank to believe a fraudulent act is occurring. This may lead your bank to lock your credit card account.
